Description
This chapter introduces the applications of building integrated photovoltaic thermal (BIPVT) systems to transportation systems, in which solar energy can provide the power for transporting people in a transit system called personal rapid transit (PRT). In the beginning, several historic PRT systems around the world are reviewed, and the current status of PRT is evaluated with the challenges and obstacles on the way to its popularity. Then, an example of the PRT in Morgantown, West Virginia, is discussed where this system is employed to transport students on the campus of the university and also open to the public. Finally, a PRT system coupled with BIPVT, called JPods, is introduced in which the pods will run through a sun tunnel and the BIPVT panels on top of the solar canopy will feed the electricity for moving the pods. In the end, feasibility studies of PRT systems are introduced for the public transit service in some regions at New Delhi, India and Rotterdam, Netherland.
