Description

While power systems that can legitimately be called microgrids—locally controlled power systems that can function either as grid connected or as electrical islands—have existed since the dawn of the industry, their modern development has mostly occurred in this century. This chapter examines the nature of the technical changes taking place and envisions an alternative microgrid focused paradigm for the future power sector. Microgrids are defined and categorized with examples provided. Some of the notable implications for electricity supply resiliency, power quality, and reliability are described and the possible impact on existing and new power sector players explored.
