Description
The paper describes two methods for detecting and locating leaks in long pipelines. The methods are based on an extended Kalman filter designed by lumping the non-linear Distributed Parameter (DP) system representing the pipeline system using the method of characteristic lines. In the first method, artificial leak states at predefined positions are estimated and used to locate the leak. The detection scheme in the second method is based on the innovations of a 'normal operation' filter. Simulation results are presented to assess the methods.
