[4]5 Advances in the Techniques of Nonanticlinal Hydrocarbon Trap Location

Description

Improved technology and methodology in geophysical surveys in the USSR permit a planned approach to identification and mapping of various types of nonanticlinal traps. The paper reviews most typical exploration targets: reefal features, erosional paleochannels, traps associated with lithological pinchout, facial changes in reservoir formations on monoclines and in clinoform sequences, etc.Integrated investigations of such traps in a number of known oil fields provides a rational exploration methodology for those traps. The state-of-the-art methods in the search for nonanticlinal traps are based on a combination of seismic exploration and deep drilling. These methods are applicable at all three stages of geological exploration: regional, prospecting and exploratory. In the first stage a general geohistorical model of the sedimentary basin is formed. The subsequent stage aims to identify local potential targets, while detailed seismic survey examines spatial forms of targets, rock composition is predicted, drilling sites for prospecting and exploratory wells are proposed.Integrated interpretation of seismic and drilling data from study areas generally includes three major steps: seismostratigraphic analysis, geohistorical analysis and geological analysis for potential oil. The paper emphasizes geohistorical analysis which studies how seismostratigraphic units relate to geologic processes (tectonic, paleogeographic, paleomorphologic).Detection of nonanticlinal traps on seismic time sections is illustrated by case histories. Exploratory indicators for the main types of nonanticlinal traps are discussed. The investigation complex outlined aims at improving geologic exploration efficiency.
