Venezuela has 297 billion barrels (297 x lo9 bbl, 47.2 x lo9 m') of heavy and extraheavy oil and natural bitumen reserves that are recoverable by primary means and steam injection. An important portion of these reserves, mainly of heavy and extraheavy oils, has been exploited for many years with well established technologies at competitive costs.The present producing capacity of heavy and extraheavy crudes amounts to 1.0 x lo6 BOPD (159 x IO3 m3/D).Cyclic steam injection and steamflooding have resulted in high produciqg rates while yielding recoveries expected to reach up to 45% of the STOOIP.In addition to the production from weil developed fields, Venezuela still has huge reserves of heavy and extraheavy oil and bitumen in the Orinoco Belt. In order to improve the economics of future development, the Venezuelan oil industry supports a comprehensive and intensive R&D effort, as well as many field pilot projects, to optimize all phases of the production operations. The results of these activities, along with Venezuela's already ample expertise, will guarantee the hydrocarbon production that the nation will require to meet its commitments in the world energy market.This paper presents the most relevant technologies that have been developed through commercial projects, R&D effort and field pilot projects. Special emphasis has been placed on the new inverted emulsion technology to produce and transport these type of hydrocarbon.Le Venezuela possède 42 milliards de tonnes de réserves de pétroles lourds, extra-lourds, et de bitumes récupérables par des moyens primaires ou par l'injection de vapeur. Une part importante de ces réserves (essentiellement de pétrole lourd et extra-lourd) est exploitée depuis de nombreuses années, grâce à des techniques bien éprouvées et à des prix compétitifs.La capacité actuelle de production de bruts lourds et extra-lourds est de 50 Mt/an. L'injection de vapeur, cyclique ou continue, a permis d'atteindre des débits élevés de production, et des coefficients de récupération allant jusqu'à 45%.En plus de la production de ses gisements traditionnels, le Venezuela dispose des énormes réserves de pétroles lourds et extra-lourds de la ceinture de l'Orénoque. Pour améliorer la rentabilité des développements futurs, l'industrie pétrolière vénézuélienne poursuit un effort intense de recherche et effectue un grand nombre d'essais pilotes afin d'optimiser toutes les phases de l'exploitation.Le résultat de ces activités, ajouté à la déjà grande expérience du Venezuela, garantira la production des bruts lourds et extra-lourds, dont la nation a besoin pour assurer ses engagements sur le marché mondial de l'éne
