Description

In a gas turbine rig featuring combustion staging, staged operation was achieved under steady state operation. The secondary combustion stage is a single transverse jet of premixed natural gas fuel injected into an accelerated vitiated confined crossflow. Flame stabilization occurred a few jet diameters downstream of the flush injector and the average position of the crossflow flame from the injector face was controlled by the addition of hydrogen. The behavior of the flame under increasing hydrogen mole fractions is described via OH* chemiluminescence and OH PLIF measurements. Because the acceleration of the vitiated confined crossflow increases the strain rate field in the vicinity of the jet, the increase in the reactivity of the premixed fuel required to reestablish the flame at the same average unattached position was quantified. In addition to the mean unattached position, the required increase in reactivity required to keep the flame attached to the orifice at increasing strain rates was also quantified. Competing effects of mixing namely: dilution of the jet in crossflow from the vitiated air and increase to ignition temperature are also discussed. The effect of mixing is also quantified by varying the fuel composition at attachment. The application to low carbon footprint power generation units is proposed. 2020, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. All rights reserved.
