Description

A review of corrosion monitoring and inspection technologies is presented including descriptions of the available techniques and examples of their application in various industries. The advantages of online corrosion monitoring and inspection are emphasized. Online monitoring allows correlation with plant operating variables enabling corrosion mitigation practices, in particular corrosion inhibition, to be controlled, resulting in improved management of corrosion. The application of nondestructive testing/examination (NDT/E) to corrosion inspection has developed rapidly. In particular, the application of online inspection techniques to equipment such as pipelines has led to considerable improvements in operational reliability and the prevention of incidents.
