Description

There are nearly 1000 million tons of oil and gas resources in the South China Sea, but 83% of the natural gas resources and 70% of the natural gas resources are in the deep water and 500 kilometers away from the mainland of China. How to effectively develop the natural gas resources in the deep sea in the South China Sea has become one of the focuses of attention. Adopting conventional development mode of pipeline transportation may bring about technical and economic infeasibility. At present, innovative technologies such as high compression, liquefaction and solidification of natural gas at offshore facilities are considered feasible solutions for the development of deepwater gas resources. Floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG), floating compressed natural gas (FCNG) and floating natural gas hydrate (FNGH) are considered to be the potential and applicable in the development of deepwater gas fields. This paper, starting from the current status of technologies of FLNG, FCNG and FNGH at sea, analyzes their technical features, key technologies to be solved, technical challenges, and the prospect of popularization and application, so as to provide technical support for the economic and efficient development of the deepwater and gas fields in the South China Sea. The analysis results show that FLNG is relatively mature at present in the world, and two FLNG carriers have been put into operation, however, key technical problems encountered by the FLNG equipment in the South China Sea project and localization of the key equipment need to be solved. Although there is one CNG transport ship in the world, there is no FCNG project that has been put into operation. Most of the researches on FNGH storage and transportation technology are still in the experimental stage and are not fully mature. There are still many key technologies to be tackled for commercial application of FNGH. In general, FLNG is suitable for the development of gas fields with a long distance and a large number of gas resources. FCNG is more suitable for the development of gas fields with a short distance and a small amount of transportation, while FNGH is more suitable for the one with a small distance and relatively long distance. 2019, Editorial Office of Ship Building of China.
